Interview: City Style with Jetting Around Pola
If you’re big on city travel, Jetting Around’s Pola is your go to travelista. Read on to find out why she always makes room for a pair of heels in her travel bag and check out her travel blog to learn more about her travels!
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR TRAVEL STYLE
Casual elegant, just like my style at home. As a city traveler, I need to be prepared for a variety of outings – during one trip I might go to a soccer game and then a jazz club. I bring jeans, baby tees, and flats for sightseeing, but always find room for a dress and high heels for a night out on the town. Whatever I wear, I try to make it both comfortable and stylish.
DO YOU PREFER TO TRAVEL WITH CARRY-ON OR WITH A REGULAR SIZE SUITCASE OR BAG? DO YOU RECOMMEND ANY SPECIFIC STYLE OR BRAND?
It depends on the length of the trip. For shorter ones I prefer a carry-on, usually a 22” roller suitcase (I don’t like to carry heavy bags, so wheels are the key). Carry-onsare great because you don’t need to wait for luggage at the airport or worry that it will get lost. The only drawback is having to downsize my cosmetics bag… On longer trips I bring a bigger suitcase – 27” fits enough and is manageable.
DO YOU TEND TO OVERPACK
I used to, but learned the hard way not to… Once you drag your suitcase uphill on a cobbled street in Europe, your perspective changes!
HOW DO YOU STAY STYLISH WHILE TRAVELING WHEN YOU CAN’T HAVE YOUR ENTIRE CLOSET WITH YOU?
When packing, I choose a simple color scheme, mostly black plus one of two complementing colors. The goal is to bring fewer pieces (I do enjoy traveling light), but ones that can easily be mixed and matched. The secret weapon is accessories – scarves and jewelry. They are light and don’t take up much space in the suitcase, but can add so much to a simple outfit!
WHAT ARE THREE OF YOUR MUST HAVE TRAVEL ESSENTIALS?
My favorite item is my Lowe pro camera bag. It’s compact and looks more like a purse, but has room for everything a travel blogger might need on the road: extra lenses, a video camera, notebook, even a mini tripod. I also bring a scarf and jean jacket everywhere I go. Unfortunately, I tend to lose my scarves! The upside is that I just *have* to go shopping when that happens.
WHAT DESTINATION OR TRIP WAS THE MOST FUN TO DRESS FOR?
The annual trip to Toronto to see my home soccer team, the Chicago Fire, play Toronto FC on the road. I get to bring lots of scarves and other gear to show local pride alongside fellow supporters.
WHAT DESTINATION SURPRISED YOU THE MOST WITH THE WAYS LOCALS DRESSED OR THEIR TYPE OF CLOTHING?
I can’t recall a situation like that. Maybe because I live in a multicultural city, where you get to see a variety of styles, nothing really surprises me on the road.
WHAT’S YOUR PREFERED TRAVEL OUTFIT ON A PLANE
Jeans, boots or some cute and comfortable flats, baby tee, a sweater or jacket, and a scarf (I often get cold on the plane).
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE TRAVEL ACCESSORIES?
Besides the scarf I mentioned, I often pack a hat (my favorite one is a black, military-style cap), and jewelry, mostly earrings, pendants, and a few rings. The one I bring with me on most trips is a round silver ring that my mom gave me years ago. It goes with almost everything and is older than me – I value it greatly.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE TRAVEL BEAUTY ESSENTIALS
Good facial cream with SPF, mascara, and lip gloss. If I were to bring only three beauty products, that would be my list. They make me feel comfortable and put together, effortlessly.
DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIFIC HAIR OR MAKEUP PRODUCTS THAT WORK GREAT FOR TRAVELS?
Clinique’s Lash Power Mascara is the only one I’ve discovered that really doesn’t smudge. Yes to Cucumbers Facial Towelettes are great on short trips and replace a cleanser and toner if I’m only bringing a carry-on. And Davine’s MOMO – Moisturizing Anti-Frizz Protective Fluid makes my hair look good without having to style it. I recently discovered travel-sized toiletries by Ickle Bockles and like their natural shampoos and shower gels.
HOW MANY PAIRS OF SHOES DO YOU TRAVEL WITH AND WHAT STYLES?
Deciding what shoes to bring is by far the hardest part of packing for me. I remember bringing five pairs for a week in Hawaii, but those days are gone! Now it’s 2-4 pairs tops and four would only be for a longer trip. What I pack depends on the destination and time of year, but it’s usually a combination of elegant and sporty, flats and comfortable heels. What I’d never bring is flip flops – not a fan of how they look and feel.
DO YOU HAVE ANY CUTE BUT COMFORTABLE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FOOTWEAR?
I like Clarks shoes – they are both stylish and easy on your soles.
WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST TRAVEL FASHION OR PACKING MISTAKE?
Packing too many pieces and then not using half of them. Carrying those heavy bags was not fun.
FINALLY, ANY TRAVEL PACKING TIPS FOR NEW TRAVELERS ?
Pack light and your back/shoulders will thank you later. Unless you’re going to the desert, you can always buy a few extra things you might need. What I learned on a recent trip, when my bag was delayed for two days, is that facial soap can be used as shampoo and laundry detergent… It’s a good idea to pack a few essentials in your carry-on and not assume that your luggage will arrive at the same time as you.
