The Ultimate Fashion Guide for Your Trip to Europe in Summer: Amsterdam
Written by Chantelle Mallin
Amsterdam is such an effortlessly cool city; the style is pretty casual, with people preferring to emulate comfort over anything else, the Dutch are champions in looking stylish without an ounce of formality and stiffness.
Summer is a great time to visit Amsterdam, the weather is pleasant and the city is alive with outdoor attractions and performances making it the favored time to visit for tourists, however, not unlike the rest of Europe, the weather can be unpredictable. Make sure to pack a pair of oversized sunnies, a fedora style hat, waterproof ankle boots, a lightweight jacket and a trusty umbrella to make sure you are covered for all-weather scenarios.
For your summer wardrobe think mostly casual clothes that you can dress up with a few key items – pack a pair or cropped skinny jeans (perfect for cycling), a circle skirt – avoid figure hugging or revealing designs, a loose fitting printed shirt dress and plenty of casual neutral tanks, t’s, camis and tunics, if you plan on getting your pins out opt for a pair of culottes shorts, the perfect trend style for summer. For night, make sure to pack a light pastel sweater and a blazer, perfect for layering over your favourite dress for a casual feminine evening look.
Shoe-wise, stick to a pair of comfy loafers, sneakers or sandals for exploring the city by day, swopping to a pair of heeled ankle boots for drinks at night, be prepared, a lot of the streets in Amsterdam are cobbled, stay away from stiletto heels to avoid a disastrous holiday ankle injury.
The favored way to explore Amsterdam and it’s hundreds of grachten (canals) in summer is to hop on a bicycle, bear this in mind when packing your travel wardrobe and stay clear floaty fabrics and loose fitting sandals, ensuring you remain safe and comfortable whilst you pedal your way through the amazing city.
