Dr. Scholl’s Cushioning Insoles for Flats and Sandals
Gel Inserts
You can create a soft and comfortable feeling in many shoes by adding your own padding. Whether they’re sneakers, boots, heels, or flats, add a padded insole to massively increase your comfort.
Everyone always asks me for the most comfortable shoes to wear in winter, and I always recommend boots. My secret is to add soft insoles to make boots even more comfortable!
Even during long promotional modeling gigs where I was required to wear high heels, I survived with specialty insoles for heels like these. For most other closed shoes, I use a style like these. You can also find a large variety of insoles to meet your needs on Target.
One of our readers sums it up with her recommendation: “Put inserts into your flats and wear them around town for a day. If your feet hurt at the end, get better shoes. If not, party on”. Well said.
The next time you plan your travel shoes for a trip, don’t forget the easy-to-pack, removable shoe padding.
Need arch support? It’s challenging to find ballet flats with arch support. You’ll love these gel arch support insoles and appreciate our list of the best travel shoes with arch support even more!
Hue Women’s 4-pair pack Hidden Cotton Liner
Discreet Shoe Liners
Even the most cute and comfortable ballet flats for travel could be improved by simply adding discreet shoe liners like those shown above. You can use them for sneakers, too. The best part is that they’re thin and pack small, so you only need a few on your trip; just hand wash them as you go!
The readers’ favorite no show socks are from Bombas and the above low cut socks are perfect for flats! They don’t slip, they’re comfy, and durable. They’re definitely worth the hype!
Tip: Choose a pair of no-show socks for the best women comfortable flats that are the same color as your shoes for the most discreet option!
How to choose the most comfortable and cute ballet flats for travel
When selecting the most cute and comfortable ballet flats for travel, look for cushioned insoles, flexible soles, and supportive construction. The best travel flats combine style and comfort, allowing you to walk moderate distances without pain while keeping your outfit polished.
While ballet flats aren’t ideal for long sightseeing days, they’re perfect as a secondary pair for travel, business trips, or evening outings. Pair them with dresses, skirts, or tailored pants to elevate your look while keeping your feet happy. Always bring one sturdy pair of shoes for extended walking, and reserve your comfortable travel flats for style and convenience.
These are great options if you’re looking for the best ballet flats for walking Europe!

I love my Tory Burch flats. They are comfortable and easy to pack!
These comfortable flats for women sound like the perfect blend of style and practicality! It’s great to see fashionable options that don’t compromise on comfort, making them ideal for everyday wear. The variety of designs means there’s something for every outfit, whether casual or dressy. I can’t wait to explore these options and find my new favorite pair!
What are the animal print flats in the middle of the main image? I don’t see them listed. Thank you!
Hi Brandy, they are the Yosi Samra flats.
If you’re interested in animal print shoes, we also have these articles too!

Thanks for sharing a couple of options without the elastic back. I can never find flats that are comfy when the back is elastic, so I’m excited to check out the other ones.
I bought Rothy’s for a trip and they were so uncomfortable that I ended up in my Reef flip flops the entire time. Definitely recommend wearing whatever shoes you choose around the house a feee days!
I own 2 Tieks and im so happy we with my purchase! Very comfy esp for my feet ?
Hi Asih, thank you for sharing your recommendation of Tiek ballet flats! 🙂
If you haven’t tried Rothy’s, you should! three styles, lots of cute colors. And not too mention, probably the most comfortable shoe I own. They are a game changer. They are like wearing sneakers, but you look cute. My good friend just got back from 3 days at Disney with her 2 year old and husband and only wore her Rothty’s ALL DAY. They are even packable and machine washable. They are also made from recycled material and sustainable. They are a win-win. You should check them out.
Hi Melissa, thank you so much for sharing your great review of Rothy’s shoes! 🙂
Hi
We are travelling to Vietnam and Cambodia later this year. We will be walking a lot what type of shoe do you recommend. This will be our first trip overseas.
Hi Pat, thank you for your comment! Have a look at these TFG articles for some ideas: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/20-comfortable-and-cute-walking-shoes-for-travel/ https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-travel-shoes/ hope these help! Also to get you the most feedback possible, I have posted your question on the TFG Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl/ Keep an eye out for replies from Wednesday. Have a great trip 🙂
I would like to add Rothys to the list. They are my holy grail flat. They conform to your feet, which is great if you have bunions or odd shaped toes, or something along those lines. They are washable, the insole is removable (I prefer to use a Ja-Vie insole which has more support), it is squishable to pack in a carryon, its eco-friendly, they are breathable but also wicking, and overall they are COMFY. I have tried so many flats and many I can’t even get through a quick errand without getting rubbing or blisters, but these I can wear all day.
ditto!!!
I’m a bit confused! When you say “cute and comfortable” do you mean for just getting thru airports, train stations, etc, or do you mean for sightseeing? I’m looking at the Tory Burch Minnie ballet flats for an upcoming 10 day European cruise in the Fall. I am bringing Addidas sneakers for comfort, a pair of heels for evening and am wondering if the TB ballet flats will be okay for walking in European cities (Barcelona,Rome,Monte Carlo, Venice, etc). Thanks – I really appreciate all your tips!
Hi Gae, our list features ballet flats with a balance of style and comfort. They are more comfortable than other options available. However, whether they are worn for sightseeing as opposed to other aspects of travel depends on the wearer’s comfort level. Some travelers require support so ballet flats don’t work for them for sightseeing while others have no problem with it.
I’m not sure how to post my own quest, sorry to jump in here. BUT.. I’m going to Disney, and as we all know, it’s a LOT of walking. What would be your recommendation for something like that?! It’s my first visit and I don’t want to be sore ( well, as least as possible!) THANKS!!
Hi Gloria, choose a pair of these shoes instead: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/20-comfortable-and-cute-walking-shoes-for-travel/ These Disney tips are also helpful: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-pack-for-disneyland/ and https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/disney-world-packing-list-visit-the-magic-kingdom-in-comfort-and-style/ Have fun!
Great share!!
You are definitely missing Sam Edelman here! IMO he makes the most comf flats out there. My favorite is sadly not being sold anymore (http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/sam-edelman-alaine-scalloped-topline-flat-women/3944762) but I have several pairs of SE flats and they are my go to.
LOVE Sam Edelman! Good choice 🙂
About to leave for Northern Italy. Should I go with the Sam Edelman’s? TIA!
great info.
what flat do you recommend for Europe that is lightweight. Weight is important for packing these days.
tx!
I think someone mentioned Rothy’s above. They are my obsession right now! Super lightweight and great for packing and form to feet well (no blisters for me!!!). The only downside is they don’t have a lot of support if that’s something you look for in a shoe 🙂
Hi Alex, just wondering if you have ever tried Cocorose London ballet shoes? Well known for comfort and large range of classic or cute & quirky designs! There is also a matching purse for the shoes to fold into especially for travelling
I live abroad and travel extensively. Looking for the perfect ballet flat has been a challenge especially as I get older. I can advise your readers that Tieks are NOT worth their cost. They are darling and comfortable as an around town/run your errands kind of shoe, but I would not recommend them for all day walking around Europe.
Thanks for the feedback Brooke!
OMG agreed! I had blisters the size of silver dollars walking around Paris in Tieks, I switched to Nikes the next day. Tieks aren’t made for anything but concrete and carpet flooring.
I actually walked extensively for days on end on old cobblestone with no issues in my tieks. They’re the only flats that don’t hurt my feet in some way. Most of the ones on this list were either too narrow, cut my ankles, caused blisters, or didn’t have enough support. I’ve found tieks to be perfect.
Me, too! After reading rave reviews I broke them in and they were AWFUL. I had blistered and open skin everywhere. I ended up selling them on to someone else and got Rothys which are cheaper and 100x more comfy.
After checking out your list of flats, I found a pair that worked great when I went to London and Paris recently. Alfani Step n Flex. I went with the tan so it would go with all my outfits. Got home and ordered a pair in black since they were so comfortable.
Thanks for the suggestion Nina!
I had no idea there so many options. I only wear flats at work and these examples are a perfect list of suggestions. Thank you!
Thanks!
Hi Alex! I am traveling to Venice, Italy for a month and I also like to travel carry-on only.
However, I too am having difficulty narrowing my clothing and shoe choices. I appear to be older than most of your reader’s; (celebrating 55 in Italy) but I have enjoyed reading through the comment’s on my “sole search” and for my soul traveling.
So glad I stumbled on your great informational blog.
🙂
Thanks Jane, glad you’ve enjoyed the posts! Happy birthday 🙂
Have you heard anything positive or negative about Rothy’s Shoes? The look cute and dry quickly.
The toe box is not very high and not a lot of support ?
I like my Tieks. I haven’t tried to wear them to walk long distances yet, but they’re definitely the best flats that I’ve worn. They were expensive and I have to admit that I was worried about spending that much money on a pair of ballet flats.
I can speak from experience that the Cole Haan flats are great!! I have a couple of pairs. You can score them at a great price at a Cole Haan outlet!
Sam Edelman are so comfy I have 2 pair and will be getting a third
Two of my favorite are the VIONIC Spark Surin – great support – and the Liz ballet flat by Lindsay Phillips – super stylish because of the changeable snaps:)
I really need to get a new pair of flats! Thank you for this!
Thanks for the comment Emily! Glad you like some of the suggestions! Happy travels!
I have a really hard time seeing Tori Burch’s mentioned here — they set off metal detectors! They cannot be worn to airports. They really should not belong on a travel list.
Thanks for your feedback Tricia! Fortunately, they’re easy to slip off when you go through security.
Surprised to see Tory Burch on this list. These are the most uncomfortable flats I have ever owned and I have quite a collection of ballet flats. I end up with bleeding blisters just wearing them to work.
Hi Cristina, thank you for sharing your feedback of the Tory Burch ballet flats, I am sorry to hear you have that terrible experience 🙁
Great collection of ballet flats for travel. I think everyone should be able to find one brand that they like. I’ve always been a fan of Tory Burch flats but some Tory styles weren’t always super comfy. These new Tory Burch Minnie travel flats are perfect for travel but also comfort. They do have the female travelers jumping for joy and even a few guys like myself are taking advantage of these amazing Tory flats.
Great post, thanks for sharing.
Brian
Thanks for the comment Brian! Great to hear your perspective! Safe travels!
Aww thanks. I love the Minnie’s for travel or everyday outfits. I have a pretty big collection of them as well.
Safe travels to you too.
Thank you Brian! You as well!
Hello,
I’m stumped. Will be in Europe for 3 weeks in June/July. Will be traveling to Croatia (1 week), Prague, London, and Dublin (2 weeks). Will be doing beach, city, national park in Croatia. Bringing ipanema sandals, naturalizer sandals b/c hot and summer, and slip on tennis shoes (addidas). Should I consider bringing a pair of ballet flats as well since I’ll be in cities as well? Thanks
Danielle
Hey Danielle 🙂 It sounds like a really exciting trip! I would say you don’t need more than 2-4 shoes for your trip and your tennis shoes (if comfortable) could be great for your city trips. Take a look at our 10 step guide for packing shoes for travel http://bit.ly/1WCnavT 🙂
Hi!
I will be traveling to Belgium, Amsterdam and London in May 2016 and can’t decide on what or how to pack… I will be in Belgium for 1.5 days, 3.5 in Amsterdam and 2.5 in London…I know the weather will still be on the cool side and rainy..I don’t want to pack too much or too little…would appreciate some suggestions.
Thanks.
Trying to narrow down the shoe options is the most difficult part of packing light for me! Thank you for the great advice
Thanks Victoria 🙂
After having MANY procedures on my back, I have a problem finding shoes that don’t cause more pain & stress to my lower back.
Hi Randa, traditional ballet flats may not work for you but have you tried Vionic and Naot shoes?
Hi Alex, Have you ever tried the Tieks ballet flats? I’ve been contemplating them for some time but the price is holding me back. I have no problem investing in a quality shoe that will last, but I wonder if they are amazing enough to warrant the price tag.
Hi Jen, I haven’t tried them but I have great things but I’ve also heard not-so great things. I think before purchasing them I would consider if you typically wear flats and are already comfortable without arch support. If not, then maybe I would buy a less expensive pair like these from Butterfly Twists http://bit.ly/1mlLfqU to see if you like this type of shoe. If you find flats to be comfortable in general than maybe Tieks would work. From what I understand is that they are an extra-comfortable flat but don’t expect to use them as your main walking shoe.
I bought them after so many rave reviews. I hated them. They were about as comfortable and supportive as a pair of $20 flats. I don’t get the hype. I had blisters and open skin all over my foot. I ended up selling them on and getting Rothys which are 100x better.
Great post! Any way you can update this for current styles? A lot of these are sold out. Thanks!
I’ll definitely add it to my list!
Hi Alex,
Great tips for travelling in a comfortable way. I have problems in the top of my feet so I’ ve been wearing flats for a while. For me the mos comfortable flats are sam edelman felicia, Frye Carson flats, Lacoste marthe ivy , MK fulton, and also the Hush puppies and Vince Camuto Ellen, I really recommend these brands. Happy comfy trip.
You have awesome taste 🙂 I also love those brands too!
I walked over 20 miles NYC in less than two and half days in my Camper Right Nina Mary Jane ballet flat. My feet were in heaven. Black is a little boring, but I picked up a second pair in turquoise 2 while I was there and the colors are way cuter. The leather is buttery soft, no hot spots, and the elastic helps prevent heel slippage.
http://rstyle.me/~2bwIa
Great tip! Thanks!
Comfy flats are my most fave foot wear when traveling. Mine are merrell flats. Love ’em!
Everyone loves them!
Awesome article! Comfy flats are a necessity for travel and you can still look cute. Thanks for the suggestions!
Thanks! Glad you like them 🙂
I have the new balance flats for work and I live in them. So comfortable, nice and padded. Highly recommended!
Thanks for sharing!
For my upcoming trip to Italy, I bought the Geox Donna Piuma Ballerina 25 after looking around for a very long time. I think I might try the inserts that you suggested. Thanks!
I love Puma flats!
I’ve had a pair of Miu Miu patent flats (which I re-heeled when I bought them) for about 6 years. They’ve traveled with me on my RTW and everywhere else. Super comfortable, I can explore for hours. They more of a luxury but after all the years I’ve had them, worth the expense 🙂
When you have a good pair of shoes, they’re always worth the expense 😉
I agree – good shoes and a comfortable bed are the two best supporters.
