Loveappella Roll Top Maxi Skirt | Sizes XS-XL
Best Travel Skirts: Maxi
Maxi skirts are perfect for almost any destination. A long skirt is a long time choice for most female travelers. It keeps you feeling girly, cool, and modest, making one great travel maxi skirt.
Although it is easier to style than a midi skirt and is a safer choice than a mini skirt, it usually works well on medium height women or taller women. It tends to cut shorter women in half, and they should opt for a maxi dress instead of a skirt.
Look for maxis with a straighter cut so you don’t have to squeeze excess fabric into your bags. Also, choose wrinkle resistant fabric for a more polished look.
Maxi skirts pair well with lots of different tops, but I prefer a fitted top to balance the fuller and longer skirt. Add a side knot to gather your excess fabric and give a bit of personality to your outfit.
Maxis make versatile travel skirts that are perfect for almost any destination.

Quince 100% Washable Silk Skirt | Sizes XS-XL
Best Travel Skirts: Midi
Midi skirts work well for quite a few destinations. Over the last couple of years, the midi-length skirt has made a comeback to the fashion world. It’s my favorite length because of its versatility and vintage look.
Midi skirts normally hit below the knee to mid-calf, similar to a tea-length skirt. Because of its length, it is one of the best travel skirts. It keeps you cool but covers your knees for more restrictive sites or cities. They also work great on hot bus trips to keep your legs off sticky seats.
The RipSkirt Hawaii is adored by TFG readers, find out why in this review!
Naggoo Womens High Waist Midi Pleated Skirt | Sizes S-XL
There are lots of ways to style midis, but a fuller skirt looks great paired with a tank and stylish sandals. Add wedges and a statement necklace to dress it up for nighttime. Keep the style feeling young with a tucked in fitted top and nice accessories.
If you want to be extra trendy, pair a high waist body conscious skirt with a crop top to elongate your legs. Get all my travel fashion tips in Pack Light Stylishly!
When selecting a skirt, look for one made from a light material and not prone to wrinkles. Also, to ensure it takes up minimal space in your luggage, avoid bulky skirts with lots of layers.

RipSkirt Hawaii Quick Wrap Athletic Cover-up | Sizes 0-18
Travel Skirts: Mini
Mini skirts are great for tropical climates, beach towns, cruises, and resorts. The mini is a favorite of young women and is the most risky of the travel skirt styles. The culture and weather of your destination should always be your first concern when deciding what to wear.
If you are traveling to a very conservative locale, then your mini is best left at home and you’re better off choosing one of the other travel skirt styles. It can garner unwanted attention and give the wrong impression, but if worn in the appropriate environment, it would be a great addition to your travel wardrobe.
Mini skirts are generally categorized as anything mid thigh and above. They keep you cool and add a feminine touch to your look.
Often, mini skirts work well in large cities for the summer or when paired with tights or leggings in the winter months. Also, look for skirts made with a heavier wool or tweed if you are traveling to a colder area.
Since mini skirts show more leg, a good rule is to cover your top. Sleeveless shirts look great, but try to balance the short bottom with a more modest neckline. Also, tall women should be wary that skirts appear shorter on longer legs.
The mini style can be a great option as a travel skirt where appropriate, and remember to keep it fun but classy.

This was such a helpful article! I’ve felt super confused about skirts for travel, and now I feel like I have a good idea how to figure it out for myself. Thank you!
So excited to have found this site by accident! It’s exactly what I needed! Love wearing skirts while traveling!
Great article! I don’t tend to wear skirts but am looking for something for an upcoming trip where we’ll be walking all day. I’m just trying to get past my hesitation about wearing walking/athletic shoes with a skirt. I’m doing carry-on and have to keep it light so don’t want to pack too many shoes. Thanks!
Great options! Thank you…love this website!
I love skorts. They work for so many options. I’ve got a trip to Savannah, then Atlanta, and then Aruba coming up for the next three months so I’m culling outfits now.
Thanks for these great articles! What’s the skirt in the very top photo of the article. You don’t seem to list what it is and that’s the kind of skirt I’m looking for. Thank you!
Hi Jennifer, I am afraid that since it is a stock image we are not sure what the brand is.
Sorry I could not have been of more help.
Thanks for this list. I knew there was going to be something on Amazon that would work for me, but I was never successful in the search. The Midi with pockets you highlighted was just what I was looking for. Thank you!
So glad you found this helpful in your search!
I love the skirt in the first picture, the one by the title. Which skirt is that?
Thanks!
Hi Victoria, I am afraid that the image at the top of the article is a stock image so I am not sure of the brand. ?
I did too! TFG, if you EVER find a skirt like that, let us know! The texture disguises lumps I would think, it’s sleek & sexy enough, but looks stretchy. All it needed was a few discreet pockets for travel!
I love skirts (or even skorts) for travel! I have a black cotton “softspun” knit one from Gap that’s coming on our next travel – it resists wrinkles pretty well, matches everything, feels comfortable.
Some girls think that wearing skirts is not a best choice for travel. They prefer to wear jeans but as you have given information about the benefits of mini, midi and maxi skirts, it prove useful to change girls’ opinion regarding this as it have changed mine because I thought so before reading your post.
Thanks for reading Nonita!
I think jeans are great for travel. But when you want a change, dinner out, etc., the maxi skirt (or midi) is a great addition. You can dress it up, or if the weather is too hot for jeans, dress it down a bit for daytime.
LOVE this post! and it’s so funny you mention that J Crew skirt as a great midi skirt for travel – I just did a post on Fashion and Travel in Greece and I talked about that skirt as well!! It’s one of my favourites for travelling!

Thanks! Will check out your post!
I love maxi’s for traveling! Especially when visiting locations where you might be going into temples or churches. It’s a great way to stay conservative and cool.
Totally agree! Where do you get yours?
I used to stick to pants when I traveled, but now I’m starting to see the benefits of having more skirts and dresses! Skirts particularly come in handy for countries with squatting toilets, just saying. 😉 They’re also versatile and comfortable. This is a great guide to help women of all different shapes and sizes pick the right skirt for them.
Thanks Brooke! Skirts and dresses make it super easy to feel dressed up without actually making any effort 😉
I always travel with a black knee-length skirt. It goes with all the tops, can pair with leggings for cooler days, and I can roll the waist to adjust the length if I want it a bit shorter. My favorites are A-line knits, either cotton or linen. And if paired with a black tank or tee, it passes as a dress.
“roll the waist to adjust the length if I want it a bit shorter” Good trick! That’s what i used to do with my skirt’s uniform in high school 😉
