Casual sneakers are perfect for travel, and there are a few reasons why we love them.
They are mixed weather friendly
No matter if you’re traveling to cold or warm climates, casual fashion sneakers will do your travel wardrobe justice. You can heat up your sneakers with a thicker sock to keep your feet snuggled under the warmth of your pants.
Or if you’re headed to a sunny tropical climate, you can opt for discrete sneaker socks that are just thin enough to keep your foot from rubbing against the shoe while remaining breezy.
They’re easy to clean
So you wore your sneakers through the park and they got a little dirty? No problem. Use a soft cloth to wipe away any surface dirt, gently rub them with warm water and soap, rinse, and voila! Throw them in a sunny spot while you do your other can-never-be-as-great-as-your- sneaker shoes and they’ll dry in no time.
If you’re reading this far enough in advance, you can even take preventative measures to keep your fashion sneakers looking fly. Before your trip, treat them with a stain and water repellent to protect them from the adventures ahead.
Compass Rose Carryon Size Packing Cubes: Slim Size Cubes | Medium Size Cubes
They will not take up half of your carry-on
Although it’s likely you’ll want to have these cute and comfortable sneakers on your feet 24/7… in the rare case that you want to pack them into your luggage, they’ll take up almost no space.
Many of our readers use Compass Rose Packing Cubes to organize and compress their clothing and other items they plan to bring. These packing cubes are the only ones on the market with a number and color-coded system, so you know where you packed everything.
And now the Compass Rose Packing Cubes are offered in two sizes: slim and medium. The slim size cubes measure 13” x 5” x 2.8”, and the medium size cubes measure 2.8” x 13” x 8.5”. Both fit an international carry-on suitcase. Users say the medium size is great for bulkier items!

For the past 5 years I’ve been traveling quite a bit through Europe and the United States and I adore my Adidas sneakers. I bought some echo and I really like them for the arch support but they’re a little too narrow in the toe box whereas the Adidas are super comfortable and wide enough in the toe box that I don’t get any pinching.
I recently returned from about a month in Europe (England, Wales, Germany, Austria) and can’t say enough about my Allbirds! I literally wore them every day — from shopping in London to hiking up to Schloss Neuschwanstein!
I am still in awe of how comfortable they were (are) and how my feet never hurt while wearing them. I have tried countless other shoes that have claimed to be the “most comfortable,” but they always start to hurt after a while, so I was honestly expecting a similar result with the Allbirds, and brought back-up shoes (that I never ended up wearing!)! I highly recommend them!
I love Sketchers for their style and comfort Always on point for any weather
I know finding the right shoes is the hardest thing when you have any kind of foot issue, especially when we get older and don’t have as much natural collagen padding in our feet. But I just ordered my third pair of TAOS ZSoul Sneakers and I love them. They fit me better than any other brand or style. I got two pair and broke them in before our Portugal trip by wearing them everywhere, including walking the dog, and I have even worn them to the gym. I know they don’t work for everyone, but my feet have never hurt while wearing them.
On your recommendation, I purchased a pair of Converse Shoreline sneakers. Not only do I love them for travel (the elastic at the heel makes getting through security a breeze), they have actually become my daily go-to! That means I did buy several pairs but I have found them to be absolutely worth it! Comfortable and cute. Great combination.
Skechers did not provide sufficient support in Venice; my feet and back ached. I only travel with New Balance shoes with supportive insoles added for my high arches.
I usually go for comfort over style, so I’m glad to see so many choices that offer comfort and style. Thanks for all the ideas !!
I love my Taos, would have never discovered without the TFG suggestion. Thank you!
Shoes are always an issue and can take up so much space! This has been so helpful. I’ve learned how to make comfortable casual shoes do more work!
Great help in trying to find the right sneaker! I ended up with the Ecco Soft 7 and am very happy with them!
This is so helpful- Going to Rome- then cruising the Med to Barcelona. Have some sketchers and Vionics but reading these posts again to find the perfect tennie for lots of walking
I love my New balance tennis shoes and Flip Flops. Comfortable with great arch support.
I have followed your blog for awhile now and always consult it for great travel tips and products. Due to covid I pretty much gave up heels and only wear comfy tennis shoes. I love the adidas cloudforms but also found Vionic beach slipons this year which are amazingly comfortable for running errands.
I have issues with plantar fasciitis and my go to sneaker this summer has been the vionic beach slip on. Tons of colors to choose from and sooo comfortable!
I have purchased SO many great shoes from your recommendations! I love the honest opinions and direct links to make it easy to find them! Thanks!
Thank you so much for all that your hard work. I have learned so much from you. I am so thankful to have found you before my trip to Europe which I have just returned from. Your information on the importance of the proper shoes has saved me as I had been walking about 9 miles daily for almost 7 weeks. I cannot thank you enough for your guidance as I made sure I had the proper walking shoes and sandals for the trip. Hanna
I have 2 pairs of Allbirds and they’re the only tennis shoes I take on trips. LOVE them! And, I’m 56 with foot issues.
This info has been valuable in helping me find the right shoes. Thanks for doing all the work.
I have recently purchased a pair of Birkenstock Bends. I am loving the arch support. Typically I travel with my El Naturalista boots and a pair of sandals. But I’m excited to travel with my sneakers instead of the boots! So much more versatile across climates and styles.
This post was super helpful in finding sneakers that were both cute and durable for my recent trip to Europe!!!
I live all your blogs! I’ve learned so much helpful information as I hear up to travel again.
Thanks for the tips. I always take sneakers with me when I travel whether near or far. And there are now so many great options that can be worn with whatever you’re into, even with dresses. I have worn both the Ecco 7 and now also have the white Naturalizers. Love them both. Along with Sketchers no show socks.
I’ve been trying to decide between the Taos or Ecco sneakers. The reviews on TFG for both are great. I finally decided upon the Taos. I have the Ecco slip-ons which are great for the airport and plane but the Taos Star seems more comfortable for long walks.
On our trip to Italy we all arrived to find 5 of us were wearing ECCO sneakers ! Thank you for pointing us in the right direction!
Thanks for the sneaker recommendations! Just picked up some adidas and love them – can’t go wrong with easy to clean shoes!
Love this post! So helpful. I’m loving the white FitFlops with velcro ties for my wide feet.
Cara
Great article! I can’t wait to check some of these out for my upcoming trip!
I am glad to see Ecco sneakers in the list! I own a pair of their sandals and they are also incredible to walk in for days of sightseeing. I also would like to suggest Pajar sneakers. Incredibly comfy, chic, modern, can be worn with a dress, a pair of shorts as well as with a pair of jeans. Super versatile!
I find this, and similar articles, very helpful to steer me in the right direction of what to buy that is comfortable but still stylish. I am a big fan of the website!
I love the Adidas Advantage sneaker! They are so comfortable, look great with everything, and clean super easily. I recently wore them all over London and my feet weren’t even tired at the end of each day.
Thanks, Alex, I spent a lot of years traveling without sneakers because I didn’t want to wear trainers and I didn’t realize I had other choices for comfortable sneakers.
I love Allbirds but have found the Tree Pipers style is best for my feet. Glad I live near a store that I could try them on. If I had ordered the regular sneaker online, I would have returned them and thought the brand wasn’t for me. I also wear the Birkenstock Blend in black. Three trips to Europe and they look brand new.
I am on my second pair of Taos. They have taken me on several trips in Europe and have been absolutely perfect!
I wore Keds throughout Ireland, and loved how light they were. However, I’d have to put in a better insert to wear them again. Their sole can’t compete with cobblestones. My feet hurt.
Any Adidas with cloudfoam are the only shoes that I can wear for hours of walking, right out of the box! They also have designer collabs for different colors and designs that are fun!
This was my favorite post! I spent 2 weeks in Italy this summer and wanted to limit the shoes I brought. Thanks to your comparisons I purchased the perfect pair which were comfortable, fashionable and versatile. Your printable lists are always super helpful and made packing for my trip a breeze. I bought so many of your recommendations.
Thanks to the suggestions here, I bought a pair of white Ecco 7 soft tennis shoes for my summer in Europe. They were perfect—comfortable, classy looking and versatile ! Thanks for all the tips and ideas you provide—they’re so helpful!
I appreciate when you suggest outfits to go with the shoes, it helps me consider styles I normally might not.
While my usual choise is a pair of Converse All Star Chuck Taylor’s, I have worn a number of different pairs of sneakers throughout my travels. The one thing that I do with all my sneakers is that I will swap out the standard laces with silicone laces. It turns all my sneakers into slipons which are a godsend when going through TSA.
That is an awesome idea Sandra, love it!
Hi Alex,
I have the Sperry’s in an off white, but still too heavy. I recently found and bought the
Dansko “ Henriette” which are exactly what I’ve been looking for ( for at least 5 years!). They are very comfy with good support, and also have the elastic “ toggle” fastener so are sooo very easy to slip off and on at airports etc., Cute and classy! Look them up? I got them in taupe from the Walking Co. on sale….so even better!
Thank you for sharing Connie!! ?
I am 75 with very bad feet. I need ultimate comfort without looking matronly.( I am young for my age. ) Going to Italy on a tour which requires much walking. Can you recommend the best shoes for me?
Hi Judy, you can reference all our shoe suggestions here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/travel-shoes-2/
Anything by Skechers I can almost guarantee. As a retired nurse, I spent the last 15 or so years of my working life, many days on my feet almost constantly, in New Balance sneakers. Not as cute as some of the Skechers styles, but a great sneaker alternative, and I recently found a solid black pair for my 87 year old Mom that are not ” matronly” either.
Happy travels!
Judy,
I am 70 with foot problems too! Just bought the Dansko “ Henriette” in Taupe,
though they do have a lighter color. These
are NOT clunky-looking, are very lightweight, and very supportive too. Soles
are rubber and ties elastic with a toggle to tighten or loosen. Great for off-on at airports, and very classy in my opinion!
Good luck,
Connie Qualey
I love the Kate Spade Keds. 🙂
Love the lovely sneaker options right now 🙂
I really like the denim and polka dot chucks. Where can I find them (I’ve been googling with no luck). Thanks!
Hi Sierra, The cover image is a stock photo so unfortunately I don’t know where to find the shoes. However, I searched for polka dot denim sneakers and I did manage to find similar sneakers:

I was just perusing a new set of sneakers for travel…I thought I had settled on the Tom’s Avalon–a lot like the Van’s, but I LOVE the print on those Van’s! So many choices…
Cute and comfy too!
