Canals and Couture: A Look at Amsterdam Fashion Week 2013

Step aside Paris, and make way, Milan, because Amsterdam is once again re-asserting its ambition to become a fashion capital with the return of its annual fashion week this January. With so many fantastic designers and brands hailing from The Netherlands, including the Dutch Fashion Award-winning Iris Van Herpen, and visionary Amsterdam-based designer duo Viktor & Rolf, you can be sure that the rest of the fashion world will be turning a keen eye to Amsterdam’s catwalks – and you should be, too.

The 2013 Amsterdam Fashion Week kicks off on the 23rd January with its Uptown programme of events, which are its catwalk shows featuring the Fall/Winter collections of the hottest Dutch designers. Both established and up-and-coming designers will have their chance to showcase their styles in front of national and international press, buyers and stylists, and a ticket to the shows ensures that you get to see the best of what’s on offer before they even hit the blogs.

This year, Amsterdam Fashion Week will also be launching a new and improved second component to its program in the form of Downtown, a series of events to complement the catwalk shows in which everyone can get involved. An opening party to the Downtown events will take place on January 18th at AIR nightclub and will set upcoming fashion trends to a soundtrack of the most exciting music for a night to truly remember.

Amsterdam will also be holding its first Fashion Weekend on the 19th and 20th January, and over these two days more than 50 events will take place in the iconic surroundings of Museum Square as well as a number of nearby streets. Among these unique events will be exhibitions, presentations, give-aways and pop-up catwalk shows, but on Sunday make sure you don’t miss out on what’s sure to be the highlight of the entire weekend – a catwalk show on ice in the centre of Museum Square! With flights to Amsterdam costing as little as £45 this January from airlines like Jet2, you should have enough cash left over for a new pair of shoes too.

More events will take place across the city throughout the whole of Amsterdam Fashion Week, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled, and of course don’t forget to put on your best outfit for the closing party at the Transformatorhuis on 27th January. Keep checking the Amsterdam Fashion Week website for the latest news on what’s happening in this great city.
