What to Wear in Byron Bay

Written By: Marijs Vrancken

As one of the surf capitals of Australia, Byron Bay ticks the boxes of what we mentally picture for travel to Australia. However, the little beach town has so much more to offer than surfing!

The town center is full of great restaurants filled with healthy options. Organic is big in Byron. If you don’t want to eat out, the local organic markets can provide you with locally grown produce.

You also have endless shopping options with several local and international boutiques. It’s arguably the best spot in Australia to snag a new swimsuit or create a boho look. That last one–that’s also what Byron Bay is famous for.

The Byron locals are famous for their free-spirited way of life, often walking around barefoot and enjoying every little bit that nature has to offer, whether it’s organic food, surfing, or bush walks. That certainly reflects in the local street style.

Expect a much more laid back style than classy Sydney or a more summery look than cold Melbourne. Think kimonos, playsuits, floral prints, big silver jewelry, and of course the obligatory Havaianas or no shoes at all.

The Byron Bay style has gone international thanks to local brands such as Spell Designs or Arnhem Clothing, which you can also shop in town! Bloggers love it too; Sydney local Jessica Stein of Tuula regularly steps out in one of their outfits.

This kimono can transform into a convertible dress! It’s fun, stylish, and you’ve likely never seen anything like it!

What to Wear in Byron Bay: Surf’s Up!

First things first. Since Byron Bay is located right next to the beach, it’s a perfect spot to learn to surf and spot some dolphins while you’re at it.

One-piece swimsuits are all the rage. Pick one up from Australian brand Kaiami while in town. One-pieces are not only pretty and sexy, they make surfing a lot easier when you don’t have to worry about losing your bikini to the waves.

Protect your skin from the burning sun in between surfs and fit right in with a floral kimono. When spending time on the beach, protecting yourself from the powerful Australian sun is absolutely essential. Never forget to pack a hat and your UV 50+ sunscreen.

If you’re an active traveler, you’re going to love these athletic bikini styles and cute sporty swimsuits. Take a look!

What to Wear in Byron Bay: Boho Chic

Catching the sunset at the lighthouse and going for a bite after your day at the beach? All the Aussie girls are sporting playful rompers and Byron Bay shops offer more than you could ever take home.

Whether you’re going for Mexican or to one of the many organic restaurants, a boho look will go a long way in Byron Bay. Combine your playsuit with a quality felt fedora. Not only will it protect you from those last rays of sun, hats make all Instagrams look better.

A colorful pair of espadrilles or boho sandals is perfect. Heels are optional in a place like Byron where most locals walk around barefoot.

Finish your look with silver jewelry and the necessary anklet. Maybe put a beach towel in your big bag for a drink on the beach after dinner.

What to Wear in Byron Bay: Winter

Byron Bay is far enough north on the coast to enjoy summery weather most of the year. Although when winter rolls over, you could experience a couple of rainy and colder days.

However, don’t avoid Byron Bay during wintertime as there will still be plenty to do. Go surfing with a wetsuit on, go shopping, or enjoy the organic farmers markets which will still be taking place.

Even better, winter marks the beginning of the humpback whale migrating season. Head up to the lighthouse to spot them in the distance.

The middle of winter in Byron Bay is also known for its famous festival Splendour in the Grass which draws in people from all over the country.

While daytime temperatures in Byron Bay will still be in the upper 60°s F (in the 20°s C), nighttime temperatures will drop. It’s nothing that a fringe or denim jacket can’t solve! Wear some longer styles to replace your summery playsuit. A stylish jumpsuit or floral long dress is perfect for this occasion.

We’ve got a roundup of beautiful maxi dresses – get ready to update your travel wardrobe with these versatile, pretty styles!

Even though it’s winter time, chances are you won’t need to kick your sandals to the curb just yet. If you’re lucky to experience those rare colder temperatures in Byron Bay, why not go for some awesome boots?

The Aussie version of a traditional cowboy boot, a pair of R.M. Williams boots, would look amazing under a floral dress. However, these boots are a bit pricey; second-hand cowboy boots would look great with this look as well.

If you have some extra budget, have a look at what Australian designer Zimmerman has to offer or go for some high street fashion.

Accessories for a winter look in Byron Bay are the same as summer. An on-trend straw bag is a great idea. It’s also big enough to fit those layers if it does get colder. Pack a small umbrella just in case the heavens open up and you’re ready to explore!
