Belize, quite frankly, is always pretty warm. The coldest it gets is the high 60s during the evenings. If anything, you’ll want shelter from the rain.

Still, tropical attire is appropriate this time of year, with dresses and colorful shirts and shorts serving as the perfect outfit for almost any occasion. Just be sure that when choosing what to wear in Belize that you bring some rainproof options and a light sweater or jacket for the cooler evenings.

Belize Winter Weather

No matter what time of year you’re visiting Belize, it is incredibly hot! Even during the winter, you’ll find it very warm (perhaps just a little more comfortable than the rest of the year).

Highs during the winter months are in the mid 80s with lows reaching the mid 60s to low 70s throughout December, January, February, and March.

December and January have been known to get a little wet, but typically the rainy season doesn’t start until the end of April.

Start by reading these general tips on packing for winter/spring travel:

Belize Spring Weather

Spring, on the other hand, is the most dramatic season of the year. March goes from somewhat cold and swings to the hottest time of the year with the month of May reaching the low 90’s. May is also considered a rainy month so be prepared for some humidity and extra wetness during this time of year.

What to Wear in Belize for Sightseeing

Since a majority of your vacation will most likely be beach and water-based, your attire is pretty informal. Depending on your physical activity level, you’re going to want a casual, loose dress to throw over your suit before you go diving.

Or, you might want a shorts and tank option before you hike along the coast. Whatever you choose, be sure you have the towel/swimwear combo ready for anything!

Much like Chichen Itza of Mexico, Belize has its own Mayan ruins. Here, you might want to wear something a tad more photogenic, although you will be doing a little trekking around the area. Athletic shoes or closed toe shoes are perfect with clothes that are both functional and picture-worthy.

Of course there are some romantic options on the island. Beachside dinners, bars, and a night of dancing call for a bit more flirty attire. You’re bordering along fancy and casual, so a maxi dress or frilly skirt would be perfect. Just be sure not to wear heels here!

For added versatility, these are popular convertible travel dress styles!

What to Pack for Belize: Essentials

When deciding what to wear in Belize, you’ll want to make sure you pack a few essentials, including:

  • 3-4 breezy and airy dresses (short or maxi works)
  • 1-2 cover ups (dresses, loose tops or rompers)
  • 2-3 swimsuits
  • 5 tops
  • 4 bottoms (3 skirts/shorts and 1 pair of leggings)
  • 1-2 pajama sets
  • 1-2 light jackets/wraps (depending on weather, 1 rainproof option)
  • 3 pairs of shoes (athletic/hiking, fancy sandals and flip flops)
  • Accessories (straw hats, sunglasses, colorful jewelry, etc.)

Whether you’re kayaking, snorkeling, or surfing, casual attire is recommended throughout Belize. To get from place to place, throw on a light dress that almost works as a cover up.

Put on a top and shorts that you don’t mind leaving on the beach for a few hours. Keep your active gear casual and consider a portable safe to keep your things protected while you’re off in the water.

These are the best swimsuit coverups of the season!

If you’re arriving towards the end of spring/early summer, it’s going to get a lot wetter. Be sure to bring a poncho, rain jacket and shell for your belongings,

With the exception of visiting the jungles and Mayan ruins, you really won’t need any closed toe shoes. Bring two pairs of sandals: a pair of flip flops you don’t mind going to the beach in and fancier pair for nice dinners and trips to the hotel bar.

Here are comfortable walking sandals that are stylish, too!

Belize Accommodations

Belize’s accommodations tend to range from amazing resorts to casual hostels. There are a few hotels available, but most tourists find themselves booking all-inclusive style or backpacking.

Belize is also a big cruise destination so you might find that a lot of visitors leave in the evening to sleep on the boat.

Belize Transportation

To get around Belize, you’ll be taking one of the following: car, water taxi, or plane. Hopper planes and water taxis are used to go between islands, whereas cars will take you throughout the rest of the mainland.

If you’re on one of the smaller islands, walking is a great and quick way to get to know the area.

What to Do in Belize in Winter and Spring

Belize’s greatest attractions are the Blue Hole and its Barrier Reef (second in the world in size after Australia’s Barrier Reef). Since winter and early spring are part of the dry season and equally warm as summer and fall, it is perfectly safe to swim here during this time of year.

This is also a great opportunity to visit small towns and villages, enjoy the Mayan ruins, and even visit some wildlife! Belize is home to a diverse zoo as well as a wildlife sanctuary. Throughout the lush jungles of Belize is a completely different, hidden side of this country worthy of exploration.
