Some travelers prefer a hard shell suitcase because they’re durable when being handled at airports and hauled up and down stairs or over different terrain, and are also known for protecting belongings well like electronics. If you’re in the market for a hardside, review these top reader recommendations for the best hard suitcase for carryon travel!
Best Hard Shell Luggage
Table Of Contents
Why choose hardside over soft? Hardside suitcases are usually made with polycarbonate, a flexible element made to withstand impact when heaved onto hard places. Some travelers find that their fragile items and electronics are more secure when tucked inside a hard shell container.
As an added bonus, hardside suitcases are also lightweight compared to plastic and aluminum shells; some varieties are even lighter than soft case luggage, making them key when trying to keep your baggage weight to a minimum.

Hello, I am a frequent traveler for my work, in the last 5 years I became very good at the art of packing light, I have been using carry on only, in all of my trips. I prefer expandable bags, I have the option to pack gifts and check my bag if I have to, on the way back. I first used Samsonite carry on fabric material, for 1 year, I had issues with the weight of the bag, and me overpacking. Then I changed for hard sided luggage and I love it, I began with Heys 21″ and it lasted few years, no problem and great price, my last bag was calpack 21″, lasted 2.5 years, never issues with Airlines, but the zipper of the extension broke. I am ready for a nicer suitcase that will look elegant and it will last longer. I bought on line Delsey helium titanium 21″ carry on, when the bag arrived I noticed it’s about 2″ taller and 1.5″ wider than my old calpack. I love the new one but, I am worried that I might have a problem with international travel because of the height. These are the measurements 20.5 x14.25×10.25 (+2″)
Could you please advice, I would love to keep it, do the airlines care much about the height if the bag? I thought it was mostly how stuffed the bag is (I have gotten the looks from agent at gates saying the my suitcase is too fat before and I have to compress it), should I return the bag? I really like your blog! Thanks!
Hi, thanks for the fabulous finds!
The one in the top photo really caught my eye! The bronze looking one with the box line pattern. Which one is that one!!
Thanks for your help =)
My favorite for over 10 years now has to be the original Heys xCase 21″. Unfortunately it now comes as a spinner, and the wheels add unnecessary size (tougher to load in the overhead of small planes). But it is great for forcing me to rationalize what I take with me when I travel – add a good-size carryall like a Longchamps and I am good to go for 2 weeks with no check-in! If I had the bucks I’d go for a Tumi!
Heys has an awesome variety! Keep an eye out for Tumi at discount stores you can sometimes find them 🙂
Several of these don’t fit the size restrictions for carry-on on international flights. I liked the look of #7 but the price tag of $945.00 CAD is way beyond my budget – that’s the price of a plane ticket. My favourite of the lot is #10, the Delsey Chatelet. It looks really classy in black or brown, fits int’l carry-on regs, and has top and side handles. At $212.49 USD, the price isn’t totally out of reach. Too bad Zappos doesn’t ship to Canada. Putting this one on the wish list.
The bad thing at the moment is that there isn’t one carry-on limitation across the board making it confusing. One bag never fits on all airlines. To add even more confusion, carry-on sizes for luggage in countries vary as well. Some include the wheels, others don’t. It’s so hard to keep track.
