Table Of Contents
Wool is synonymous with cold-weather clothing, and short or long wool coats can be a winter staple, yet the perception is these kinds of jackets can be heavy compared to a lightweight rain jacket or a packable puffer.
For colder weather travel, the trick is to choose more lightweight and portable fabrics, so aim for merino wool or a wool blend coat, as those are less heavy. Ultimately though, the best way to reduce bulk in your luggage is to wear the heaviest item on the plane, so a wool jacket is perfect for this and will keep you toasty onboard!
When it comes to keeping warm overall, layering is the key to retaining body heat. By adding thermals beneath clothing and a merino wool sweater under a jacket; you can always adjust by removing a layer if you need to.

How to Clean Wool Coat
In general, wool coats will need to be dry cleaned. While there are some exceptions – and some people do attempt cleaning them on their own at home—dry cleaning will extend the life of your coat and prevent damage to wool fibers.
Thankfully, you shouldn’t have to do this too frequently. Most cleaning companies recommend having your wool winter coats cleaned twice a year: once when you get it out of storage at the beginning of the season and once more before you store it again for the summer.
If you notice small spots of dirt or dust, your best bet is to try using a fabric brush. This will dislodge any particulate matter and help release dirt from wool without damaging it with water. Just be sure to brush gently, as you don’t want to grind dirt further in between the fibers, as this could cause a permanent stain.
Put simply, when it comes to how to clean a wool coat it’s best to do a big cleaning twice a year and spot clean in between when necessary.
