Just because you’re traveling doesn’t mean you have to splurge on expensive miniature bottles of every single product from your regular at-home routine. As they say, it’s the little things that get away. In this case, you might not even have noticed just how much your regular beauty routine is costing you. Here are a few ideas for cutting your travel beauty budget in half.
Budget Beauty Routines for Travel
Written By: Marina Laduda
Switch to multitasking products
Instead of carrying three different moisturizers, switch to multitasking products like coconut oil, maracuja oil, or vaseline. Not only are these alternatives easier to carry, but they’re a healthier for your skin than any chemical lotion.
- Coconut Oil
Great for using on lips, body (instead of lotion, as a body scrub), and hair, as makeup remover, spf lip balm, and more. It’s even good for your dog’s skin! Coconut oil is also an antibacterial and can also be used to treat fungal infections. Read more here. - Maracuja Oil
Just a few drops of this magical oil goes a long way. Rich in antioxidants, maracuja oil is especially helpful to relieve dry skin, itching, and sun damaged skin. - Vaseline
If you’re prone to cracked skin (or sunburns) on your face, body, or feet, Vaseline is the cure. It’s also a wonderful substitute for facial moisturizer.
Learn how to trim your own hair
It’s much easier to cut your own hair than spend any amount of money for a haircut by a person who has no idea what you’re saying.
I learned the lesson the hard way when I got my first hair cut overseas… I had chola bangs for a good four months (yikes!).

Baby powder for the day after
This versatile beauty and skincare product will surely be one of your most used items in your bag. Some ways you can use baby powder on the road:
- Use as dry shampoo after a long flight
- Smooth onto legs after shaving to avoid red spots
- Instead of fake lashes, use baby powder between layers of mascara
Buy an eyeshadow palette for all occasions
Go for a set of matte neutral colors like Eye Couture by Sonia Kashuk or Urban Decay’s Naked Basics. Use these colors for your eyes, brows, as a bronzer, highlighter, and more.
The moment you start switching up your products for these far more versatile ones you’ll realize that you never even needed those brand names after all. What’s more, most of these alternatives, if not all, are significantly less expensive than any of their fancy modern twists.

I tend to bring castile soap, hemp oil, a little Neal’s Yard or Dr Hauschka makeup, a lipbalm and I’m all set. 😀

Thanks for your awesome tips!
I use organic, unrefined extra virgin coconut oil on my skin as a moisturizer.. face, neck, elbows, legs after I shave, and it’s great at healing the dry skin up on my feet. It also makes a wonderful massage oil too. You can go to http://www.cocoluxeorganic.com/ and get it in a squeeze tube! Great for travel or to always have on hand in your purse.. no icky jars setting around. And they have free shipping in the US =)
