As spring turns into summer, cruise season has officially begun, and for anyone taking to the seas, it’s time to start considering what to pack to keep you looking hot in the sun. Luckily we’ve been exploring some great outfits for both on and off the ship.
Dedicated Editorial: Cruising in Style for the Summer
With a variety of activities and varying dress codes during a cruise, it can be quite a challenge deciphering what to wear for a cruise. Choose clothing items that can be easily adapted to suit several occasions, also bearing in mind the weather expected at your destination.

For example, if you’re heading off on a Caribbean cruise holiday, you should pack for warm weather. Light dresses worn with sandals and a sunhat will be great during the day to keep you cool, and can be glitzed up in the evening with a bolero, jewelry and heels. Or, if you’re cruising around the UK, you can expect a cooler climate, so think about some elegant slacks – perhaps white linen, which you can jazz up with a print top and some stylish heels. Make sure to pack layers for a destination like this; the last thing you want is goose flesh when you’re trying to look suave up on deck!
Since every inch of suitcase space counts when you’re packing, don’t be tempted to throw in “just in case” items. Check the weather online before you go to get a good idea of how it’s going to be. Anyone cruising the Mediterranean in the summer months is pretty much guaranteed warm weather, so you probably don’t need to bother with bulky jumpers and heavy coats. Take one light jacket that you’d feel comfortable wearing while you’re at port, in case the weather turns while you’re out walking.

You should also consider your planned itinerary. If you’ll be doing a lot of walking you’ll probably appreciate a pair of plimsolls for sightseeing during the day. Cushe Footwear offers cushy travel shoes and Toms are also a popular choice amongst travelers. Onboard, a pair of stylish thong sandals will look great during the day and a pair of heels for the night. Try to stick to colors that can go with all your clothing. Nude heels are a great choice. They not only elongate your legs but they’re also on-trend for summer.
Finally, you’re almost certainly going to want to pack swimwear; even if your destination isn’t blisteringly hot, there’s probably going to be a pool on board the ship. Pack two different swimsuits or bikinis and bring along something to wear over them during the day. Reversible bathing suits are a great way to maximize your space. On-trend styles for summer 2013 include vintage swimwear, mismatching tops and bottoms, Grecian goddess, and cut-away bikinis. A kaftan or maxi dress will keep you cool and look fantastic to finish your look.
