Questions About The Editor

Where do you live?

Nowhere! I was born and raised in Los Angeles but I have been roaming around the globe since 2008. I travel 365 days a year.

How do you travel all the time?

I’m a budget traveler so the total cost of my living expenses on the road is less than my monthly rent in Los Angeles. On average, I go home every two years and work for a few months doing seasonal work that pays me to travel around the US (so I get to save all my money and then continue traveling).

Where did you go to school?

I graduated from FIDM the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising with a Merchandise Marketing Degree in 2003.

What type of packer are you?

Because I travel long term, I constantly buy and replace clothing items depending on my location so my packing list ranges from a 10 Piece Essentials to a 15 Piece Maximista.

How much does your bag weigh?

10-12 kilos

Do you travel alone?

I traveled on tour groups in 2008, alone from 2009 to 2010, and as a couple from 2010 until the present (although I also venture off on my own for up to 4 weeks at a time)

Questions About TravelFashionGirl.com

How did you come up with the concept of Travel Fashion Girl?

Frustrated with my own packing dilemmas and discouraged by the lack of valuable women’s resources, I began planning TFG in July 2011 and interviewed fellow travelers on the road to build my research for one year before launching TFG in August of 2012.

Who writes the articles on Travel Fashion Girl?

The content found on Travel Fashion Girl is written by me along with editorial members of the TFG team and guest bloggers.

Why do your packing lists only show clothing for younger women?

You’re not meant to copy the items shown but rather gain inspiration that you can then apply to your own individual style and trip needs. What’s more important than the visuals is the written packing list that walks you through each clothing item that you need. Ie: long sleeve blouse or walking shoes. Please read this article for details about How to Use TFG’s Packing Lists.

Why is all the clothing shown look so small?

The clothing is taken directly from the brands and manufacturers – those are the sizes they choose to use to represent their clothing

Why are all the jeans on the packing lists “skinny”?

Because that’s the majority of what’s in the stores at the moment – the clothing is taken directly from the retailers’ websites

Why don’t you ever show pajamas?

For the same reason that I don’t show socks and underwear, I just show the main clothing items needed to create a capsule travel wardrobe for your packing list

Are you supposed to travel on the plane with clothing from the list or pack something separate?

Yes, you travel on the plane with clothing shown on the lists, otherwise, you are adding two additional pieces to your bag.

Why do you always show flip flops?

Because that’s the most common shoe I see travelers wearing. Alternatively, if you’re not a flip flop person, choose a shoe that you do like to wear. The most important rule for packing is to choose items you love!

I’m a mature woman that needs advice for someone my own age. Why are none of your tips geared towards me?

Unfortunately, you can only give advice on what you know and my personal  travel experiences have taken place between the age of 20 and 31. To solve this problem, I am looking to find a more varied range of contributors so stay tuned for a wider range of age friendly tips!

I’m traveling somewhere and I need a packing list. Can you make me one?

To ensure the accuracy, packing list requests take up to 4 weeks depending on the availability of information for your destination. For quick information, please post your packing questions on the Facebook page to get feedback from the TFG readers which have great advice to share.

Alternatively, I also offer personal travel styling services and can make a custom packing list and travel wardrobe for you. Contact me for more info and rates: alex at travelfashiongirl dot com
