For many people around the world, the ultimate travel destination is in the United Kingdom – London. Visuals of red double-decker buses, the royal family, music icons, pubs, and so much more attracts millions of travelers every year to visit London including those getting out and about on a summer holiday UK.
Dedicated Travel Editorial: Exploring England
What so many fail to realize is that England has so much more to offer than only London. I got a chance to live in the country for over 7 months and was lucky enough to experience a different side to this enchanting country. Fortunately for me, my boyfriend’s family loves taking staycations and they’ve been kind enough to bring me along on their local trips.
One of my very favorite places to discover has been the Lake District. I was absolutely mesmerized at the beauty found in the lush green hills surrounding this large lake. Most travelers make the trek to the Lake District to do just that – trek! There are endless walks of different levels that take you through the villages, hills, and of course, the pubs. The views are incredible and the setting is magical. Experiencing many treks around the world, this is definitely one of the prettiest!
Beachside fun can be found in various destinations around the country but so far I’ve had the chance to experience Norfolk. Enjoy a seaside stroll, play some carnival games, and east fresh seafood – just a handful of the things you can do in this beach town. One of the more popular activities here is to take a long walk from the village to the beach so this is a great place for someone that’s looking for both an active and relaxing trip.
Close to where I live, I’ve spent a few odd days here and there visiting Stamford, known as the finest stone town in England that is also home to royalty. Just an hour north of London, Stamford is a picturesque town and attracts both local tourists and foreign film crews. Burghley House is an Elizabethan House in Stamford where they filmed Pride & Prejudice, The Da Vinci Code, and Elizabeth the Golden Age.
I love British bands and indie rock and the music festivals available throughout the summer are alone worth the trip to the UK! With Isle of Wight and the massive Glastonbury coming up in June, Latitude in July, Leeds/Reading Festival in August, and hundreds of others, you’re never short of an epic live performance here. Not to mention that many pubs host cover bands that keep your favorite tunes playing all year round. England equals musical heaven for me.
If you’re traveling with your family, you can find resorts filled with every activity imaginable for children of all ages. Butlins has three locations around the UK which boast in house amusement parks, fun fairs, water parks, and live shows all to keep your family entertained. Whether you live in the UK and are looking for weekend breaks relaxing or are booking an international trip, this might be a family adventure worth considering!

Of course England has much more to offer than just these few ideas I’ve shared. Learn more about my personal travel experience living abroad in England. What are your personal favorite destinations in the UK?
I live in Scotland, with most of my family in England, so I have a great excuse to go travelling. 😉
Bath is amazing, by the way. Check out the new thermal baths there, and also in Somerset is Glastonbury Town, great wee place, wonderful energies. The Thousand Monkeys Café is recommended, as is the Chocolate Love Temple.
Oh, and in Bristol Maitreya does SUBLIME food. 😀
I can’t wait for my next holiday! This website is the perfect place to help me plan my gap year(s), so I’m already compiling a wishlist of things to ask for. (mainly packing cubes)
Thank you SO MUCH! 😀
LOVE, love England. I’ve been back many times as I have family there. Another gorgeous place to visit is Cornwall, on the western border. The scenery is like a feast for the eyes. Tons of walks and beaches. We are going back to England in 2014 and the Lake District (as well as Scotland) is on the list this time. Can’t wait to explore both!
I’ve heard Cornwall is nice there are so many beautiful places to discover! I’ve heard Bristol is nice and I really want to go to Manchester for the indie rock history 🙂
