What to Wear in Turkey

Turkey overall has a diverse attitude on clothing. In Istanbul, you can see a lot of female tourists wearing shorts, small tops and skirts. While it is okay to wear short clothing within well-known tourist areas and beaches, it’s best to er on the side of caution because you don’t know the areas well enough to know when certain clothing is acceptable.

There are liberal and conservative areas in the country and wearing short clothing will definitely attract unwanted attention and comments. This is true in Central Anatolia, where the older generation in particular, finds skimpy clothing offensive. In areas as such, women should wear light cotton tops or dresses, and bottoms that fall below the knee. Baggy cotton pants and short sleeves are alright, but sleeveless tops will draw stares.

When visiting the mosques, a head covering is advised; scarves are often used for this purpose. There are many of these items being sold cheaply in the streets and bazaar. Light scarves are also functional for evenings whenever it gets chilly.

For footwear, comfortable walking shoes are a must for those who are visiting the ancient sites. Sidewalks are often uneven, and one can expect broken roads with holes. Another set of footwear for the beach is a must. Shoes are required to be left outside when entering special districts such as Mosques.

Things to Remember

The best months to visit the country are from May to October. The season from July to August can be hot, and it is essential to pack on sunscreen, as it is quite expensive in Turkey. When visiting in winter, pack on warmer clothes especially when visiting the central eastern areas. Clothes in Turkey are both fashionable and inexpensive – pack light!
