What to Wear in Bermuda

Traveling to the gorgeous island of Bermuda truly is paradise. From the town of Hamilton and the rum swizzles at The Swizzle Inn to Southampton’s famous pink sand beach known as Horseshoe Bay, Bermuda represents bright colors, light sea breezes, and golden sun over turquoise waters.
But leave those traditional Bermuda shorts at home! First of all, they’re traditionally for men, and secondly there are so many other fun clothing options! Bermuda clothing is as playful and as colorful as the island itself, so you’ll want to be ready.
Less than 700 miles off the coast of North Carolina, Bermuda is a great jet-setter destination. With flights less than 3 hours from New York City and Philadelphia, you can enjoy the island breeze without spending an entire vacation day on a plane.
And with tasty cuisine, a unique brand of rum (Gosling’s), and a reputation for a friendly, welcome culture, you may never want to leave! All you have to do is plan what to wear in Bermuda and these style tips will make it a breeze!
General Style

An overseas territory of the United Kingdom, Bermuda draws cultural influence from a variety of locations. But local fashion is very distinct from the UK or North America.
Bermudians are incredibly friendly, welcoming, and helpful, and while they may be a bit conservative in dress themselves, using common sense is an easy way not to offend anyone (always wear shoes in a restaurant, for example).
Men wear traditional Bermuda shorts as formalwear – usually paired with a jacket and tie. While many Bermudian women wear stockings even during high summer temperatures, it’s not necessary for tourists to do the same.
In general, the island is very warm in the late spring, summer, and early fall. Cotton and breathable items are your best bet. There’s no limit to the fun you can have with colors, texture, and patterns – and keep in mind everything should be easy-breezy. You’re on an island after all!

In terms of daytime footwear, warm weather sandals are appropriate and you’ll want a pair of beach flip flops on hand. Strappy sandals or wedges are common in the evenings.

Bermuda also has a distinct marine atmosphere – being surrounded by sailboats and catamarans – many visitors find boat shoes to be comfortable and stylish.

What to Wear in Bermuda in Summer
Late May through early October is the summer season. Summer is a magnet for couples, families, and groups of friends. It’s hot, sunny, and absolutely breathtaking.
Bring these six items when planning what to wear in Bermuda:
Bathing Suit

It goes without saying that if you’re visiting Bermuda, you’ll need a bathing suit. From the ocean to the pool, you’ll be enjoying yourself in the water.
Depending on the beachfront you’re at, waves in Bermuda can be quite gentle. So don’t be afraid to rock a skimpy 2-piece and enjoy the sun!

Golfing is very popular in Bermuda, so if you end up on the green be sure to wear club-approved attire that is also fun and playful! Try pairing a brightly-colored collared polo shirt with a golf skirt or longer shorts.

Wearing a bathing suit to lunch is generally not appropriate, so have a coverup with you to throw on in a restaurant. Also, occasional rain showers are brief (and usually welcome) so you’ll want one in your beach bag just in case.
Cute sun hat
Stay cool and keep the bright rays of the sun out of your eyes with a cute sun hat. I love a wide-brimmed straw hat with a ribbon, but if you’re concerned about bringing it on a plane (or don’t have a hat box), try a smaller Panama hat, which still blocks the rays but is a bit more portable.
Pink anything
Want your look to really pop? Looking for a fantastic Instagram photo? The color pink contrasts beautifully in outdoor photos against the green palm trees and blue waters. Try a bright, saturated pink halter top or a soft pink sundress.

Straw or fabric, a beach tote is critical to carry your coverup, sunscreen, Kindle, and everything else. Look for a tote that has a top closure to prevent too much sand from getting in.
What to Wear in Bermuda in Spring and Fall
Spring and fall in Bermuda are fantastic times to visit. Flights and hotels are less expensive and having the beach (mostly) to yourself makes for a great getaway.
The weather in the fall and spring varies from a sunny, hot beach day to a cool, rainy afternoon. You’ll want to be prepared for any occasion!
If you’re taking advantage of shoulder season in Bermuda before or after the main tourist season, here are four must-haves for your wardrobe in addition to the items mentioned above for summer.
