The Weather in Los Angeles
Southern California is known for having great weather year-round. Most days are warm and sunny, though winter and spring will see some rain and gloom.
Typical weather ranges from the high 80s F (26℃) in the spring to the mid-50s F (12℃) in the winter, though different neighborhoods can vary drastically. For example, 85°F (29℃) in West Hollywood could be 100°F (37℃) in the Valley and 75°F (24℃) at the beach.
Additionally, you can expect temperatures to drop anywhere from 10-20 degrees at night!
So, remember to not only check the weather before you go but also throughout your trip, as your attire will likely change slightly according to what neighborhood you’ll be in. And, always wear sunblock – even if it’s overcast!

Head over to the East Side for brunch or once-in-a-lifetime vintage finds. These neighborhoods are home to boutique shops, Chicano culture, a bustling foodie scene, and lots of art. Here, you’ll see locals with a more artsy and experimental style, though many stick to the current trends, too.

What to Wear in Los Angeles: West Hollywood and Hollywood

Athleta Avenue Wrinkle-Resistant Romper
Sizes: XXS-XL Regular | S-XL Tall | XS-L Petite
In touristy areas like the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the handprints at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, you’ll see tourists dressed for comfort, but at night, it becomes one of the most popular party areas in LA where people really get dolled up.
During the day, consider a functional and fun romper that can pair with sturdy sneakers for all the walking you’ll be doing. Or wear some long shorts to still feel airy but add a bit of leg coverage.
Anthropologie Maeve The Colette Cropped Pants | Sizes 23-34 (Regular, Tall, & Petite)
During the day, keep it stylish with a polished t-shirt and wide leg pants or cropped pants. Or, if you want to lean more sporty, wear black leggings.

Everlane The Cozy-Rib Cardigan | Sizes XXS-XXL
In the evenings, you could wear a cozy cardigan to stave off any chill, or a cargo jacket for layering.
Blazer | Shoes | Sunglasses | Jeans | Shirt | Bag
What to Wear in Los Angeles: Beverly Hills
Beverly Hills is known for high-end shopping, gorgeous houses, and luxury everywhere you look. This iconic neighborhood is a lot more residential than you might think, though locals in this part of town typically look a bit more posh and put-together, even when they’re in casual clothes.
Spanx Poplin Oversized Button Down | Sizes XS-3X
From people-watching on Rodeo Drive to dining out to walking around beautiful neighborhoods, you’ll want to be comfortable but still look a tad elevated. The best way to do this is by sticking to the basics, so opt for a crisp white button-down shirt or well-tailored t-shirt.
Wit & Wisdom ‘Ab’Solution High Waist Wide Leg Jeans | Sizes 2-18
Pair your tops with some stylish wide leg jeans or trousers. Wrinkle-free travel pants are a great choice as they’re comfortable and functional when walking around in the heat but will continuously look polished throughout the day. Plus, many options are easy to dress up for a nice dinner.
You’ll see plenty of easy sundresses on warm days, too, on travelers and locals alike.
Shop Vionic Kimmie Sneaker: Amazon | Nordstrom | Zappos

For a jacket, a travel blazer will do the trick and keep it polished but flexible with stying options to look casual-chic or dressed up.
Dress | Sandals | Sunglasses | Jacket | Bag | Hat | Blouse | Shorts
What to Wear in Los Angeles: Santa Monica and Venice
Though Santa Monica and Venice are both beach towns and situated right next to each other, they do have two very different personalities. Venice has more of a boho, surfer vibe, and can even feel a bit grungy in some areas. Santa Monica is a bit more preppy and high-end, but both have a similarly laid-back energy.
Madewell Whisper V-Neck T-Shirt | Sizes 1X-4X Plus
You’ll do a lot of strolling in these neighborhoods, so wear lightweight and breathable tops, including tank tops and white t-shirts. Bright and fun colors are perfect for these beachy destinations!
J.Crew Tropez Linen Short | Sizes XXXS-3X
When strolling along the Venice boardwalk or riding rollercoasters on the Santa Monica Pier, wear comfortable travel pants that’ll allow your legs to breathe and move around freely. If it’s an extra hot day, opt for jean shorts or linen shorts.
If you’re shopping on Abbot Kinney in Venice or the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, stay breezy and chic with linen pants or sundresses. Options like these are polished and versatile enough to be worn to a nice restaurant or bar, too.
Shop Olukai Ohana: Amazon | Nordstrom | Olukai
For these destinations, sandals are the go-to. Comfortable flip flops or beach sandals are best for days spent near the beach, but if you’re heading to these areas at night, dress it up with espadrilles or some sassy snakeskin sandals.
J.Crew Classic Denim Jacket | Sizes XXS-3X
Be sure to bring a light, cozy layer, too. The ocean breeze can get chilly, especially at night when the temperatures drop significantly, so something like a light cardigan or jean jacket is great.
Editor’s Tip: Go to Redondo Beach Pier and indulge on fresh seafood for a fraction of the market price. Take a cheap glass-bottom boat tour and check out the kelp forests that California scuba divers love.
Hat | Dress | Pants | Bag | Sunglasses | Tank | Shoes
What to Wear in Los Angeles: Downtown (DTLA)
Downtown is a cross between an underground art scene, a cultural mecca, and a business center. This bustling and dynamic neighborhood houses various districts within it, including the Arts District, Fashion District, Financial District, Little Tokyo, and Bunker Hill.
Some areas are quite industrial while others are full of hip clothing stores and up-and-coming restaurants, and if you’re after nightlife, there’s always a new spot to check out in DTLA!
Unbound Merino V‑Neck T‑Shirt | Sizes XS-XL
It’s typically quite hot and bright in Downtown LA, so the best way to dress is comfortably. That said, you’ll see a lot of fashion industry workers strutting around in style, so this is the place to experiment with your outfits and try something bold! (But for this neighborhood, skip the designer accessories and expensive jewelry).
Athleta Brooklyn Heights Pleated Wide Leg Pants
Sizes: 0-26 Regular | 0-16 Tall | 0-14 Tall
Start your outfit off with a breathable linen top or a Merino wool t-shirt that’ll wick away sweat and keep things dry and fresh. For ultimate style points, pair an oversized top with straight-leg pants, or a slim-fitting top with wide leg pants.
If you’re heading to DTLA at night to check out the bars, clubs, and dining options, then dress it up with a silk slip skirt, a pretty black top, and ballet flats.
Shop Samba OG Sneaker: Nordstrom | Amazon | Adidas
Keep your feet protected from the tough city streets with comfortable and sturdy shoes. Even if it’s hot, tennis shoes and sneakers are the most practical options for Downtown.
Zella Studio Luxe Zip Hoodie | Sizes XS-XXL
On the jacket front, if it’s summer, a hoodie would work wonders to keep you cozy but also blend into this neighborhood.
Editor’s Tip: Make time for a basketball or baseball game especially if you’re an international visitor. Not only are they incredibly fun places to hang out with the locals, but they’re great for celebrity spotting, too!
Swimsuit | Tote | Hat | Skirt | Sunglasses | Dress | Sandals
What to Wear in Los Angeles: Malibu
Malibu is a lot more quiet and relaxed compared to the beaches of Santa Monica and Venice. Known for being home to many celebrities, the city of Malibu is a mix of luxurious and laid-back, with some of SoCal’s most famous surf spots, stunning hiking trails, boutique shops, and high-end restaurants.
Locals and visitors are always dressed casually here, so wear an outfit that’s a good mix of comfortable and cute. Linen is the perfect choice for Malibu, effortlessly chic yet beach-ready.
Tommy Bahama Coastalina Utility Linen Top | Sizes XXS-XL
Start with a classic t-shirt or linen top that you can layer over a bathing suit if you plan on hitting the beach. A cute muscle tank or trendy blouse is always a great option if you’ll be taking photos along the Malibu Pier or getting drinks overlooking the ocean at Nobu.
Anthropologie The Tilda Maxi Slip Skirt | Sizes XXS-3X (Regular, Petite, & Plus)
Flowy linen skirts are a must for Malibu! Even with a casual top and flip flops, they’ll elevate your whole look, plus they’re quick-drying and practical for spending time on the sand. Easygoing midi or maxi skirts in cotton or rayon are great options, too.
Shop Sam Edelman: Amazon | Nordstrom | Zappos
If you’re heading to Malibu for a beach day, consider a beach coverup dress that works both on and off the sand.
Finish off your outfit with some stylish sandals. Slides are perfect for chill days spent admiring the Getty Villa or shopping at the Malibu Country Mart. Or, opt for a casually luxe sandal like a leather flip flop. Just remember that both shoes are not best for long periods of walking, but to casually stroll around, they’re awesome!
At nights, definitely don a cute wrap to enjoy the ocean views and breeze even more, or have a coffee or read at a chic Malibu cafe.
Editor’s Tip: There are endless hiking trails around LA including a local favorite: Temescal Canyon trail in Pacific Palisades near Malibu.
The view at the top is astounding and worth every drop of sweat to get up there (especially in the summer). Start early, around 6-7 in the morning, to avoid the sun’s rays.
Dress | Sneakers | Hat | Jacket | Sunglasses | Romper | Backpack
What to Wear in Los Angeles: The Valley
Outside of central LA lies the infamous San Fernando Valley. With the distance from central LA comes unbearable heat and a less pretentious air – a lot of celebrities looking to “get away from it all” reside in Sherman Oaks or Studio City, and further up the Valley (like Encino and Woodland Hills), you start to get into suburb territory.
This area is incredibly casual, though the locals are still well-dressed. If you’re heading to the Valley, staying comfortable in the heat should be your main priority. Lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing will be your best friend, from t-shirts to dresses.
Shop Sweaty Betty Midi Dress: Amazon | Nordstrom (Sizes XS-XL)
Pair a simple button down with a midi dress for an effortless sightseeing look. If you’re heading to the Valley at night, chances are you’ll be enjoying the foodie scene on Ventura Blvd, so rock some stylish jeans. If you’re feeling a bit fancier, go for a flirty maxi dress.
Locals will keep it low-key with some practical (yet polished) sneakers. From museums to film studio walking tours to shopping, you may be spending a good amount of time on your feet, so stay comfortable with some trendy sneakers in the warmer months and edgy leather ankle boots in the cooler months.
Caslon Crop Utility Jacket | Sizes S-XXL
If you think you need more coverage, opt for a functional, cute short jacket that works for day or night!
Sunglasses | Leggings | Hat | Shirt | Sneakers | Cardigan | Bag
What to Wear in Los Angeles: Amusement Parks
So many people visit amusement parks when visiting Los Angeles, as both Disneyland and Universal Studios are so close by!
Unbound Merino Ribbed Racer Tank | Sizes XS-XL
You’ll be active and walking around all day, so function is the most important aspect of choosing what to wear. Merino wool t-shirts or tanks are fabulous for a hot day at an amusement park, as they’ll regulate your temperature, allow your skin to breathe, and wick away sweat! Basic cotton and linen tees are great, too.
Old Navy Micro-Pleated Skort | Sizes XS-4X
For bottoms, choose something light and easy to move around in, such as joggers, leggings, or skorts. If you want to cover your legs, opt for some breathable linen pants.
Shop Hoka Bondi 8: Amazon | Nordstrom | Hoka
Both sneakers and sandals are solid options for amusement parks, but make sure they’re as supportive as your feet need them to be, as you’ll be logging a LOT of miles!
For sneakers, choose something lightweight and breathable, and for sandals, ensure they have secure straps and keep your feet stable. And don’t forget a sun hat, to shield your face from the sun’s harsh rays, as well as sunglasses to protect eyes.
Wool& Sloan Long Sleeve Crew Tee | Sizes XS-3X
You’ll likely be spending the whole day at the amusement park, so keep in mind that while Southern California temps can be very hot in the day, they drop around 10-20 degrees at night. Make sure to bring a hoodie or light jacket and pack it away in your day bag or store it in a locker until the evening – you’ll be glad to have it!
It might also be smart to bring a long sleeve top and leggings to change into in the evening for a bit more warmth and comfort. And if you plan on getting on any water rides when it’s not summertime, you may want to bring a change of clothing!

What is the Best Luggage for Los Angeles?
Now that you have an idea of what to pack for each neighborhood in Los Angeles, it’s time to pick out your luggage. If you’re looking for a hardside pick, readers rave about the Away Carry On. It’s so easy to maneuver around airports and airplane aisles, with a telescoping handle and amazingly smooth spinner wheels. Loved for both domestic and international travel, this carry on is described as compact yet impressively roomy inside!
If you want a more traditional wheeled suitcase, the ultimate reader favorite brand is Travelpro. Their 21” Maxlite 5 carryon suitcase has spinner wheels, organizational pockets on the front, and even has expandable capacity to pack a little bit more.
Read these tips on how to pick a suitcase and consider one of these top brands.
WANDF 18″ Foldable Travel Duffle Bag
A travel tip for souvenir shopping in Los Angeles is to bring a packable duffle bag to store all your goodies.
Readers swear by the Wandf packable duffle and say it’s so easy to transport and is useful for other things like hauling laundry, not just gifts or souvenirs.
Compass Rose Carryon Size Packing Cubes: Slim Size Cubes | Medium Size Cubes
Depending on how many days or weeks you’re traveling, you may want to use luggage organizers such as packing cubes, which allow optimum use of the space in your luggage, while keeping everything organized and in place during your travels, and making the task of unpacking and repacking simple and stress-free.
Many readers use our Compass Rose Packing Cubes for packing, and they’re now offered in two sizes: slim and medium. The slim size cubes measure 13″ x 5″ x 2.8″, and the medium size cubes measure 2.8″ x 13″ x 8.5″. Both fit an international carry-on suitcase and can help you organize and compress clothing items.
The medium size is great for bulkier items or clothes you may want to fold instead of roll. Check out this video on how to organize using packing cubes, it’s incredibly easy!
Compass Rose Digital Luggage Scale
Be aware that airlines are becoming increasingly strict about baggage allowances, so use a luggage scale to always ensure you meet weight requirements. This will save you the headache of having to check in your carry on because you’ve gone over the limit, and pack it into a personal item so if you buy anything to take home, you’re not exceeding weight for your return.
And always remember to check with each airline you’re flying with to see the latest baggage policies as they can change.

Best Purse or Day Bag for Los Angeles
If you’ll be out and about all day and want to make sure you have all the essentials on you, opt for a backpack! It should be compact and comfy to carry yet nice and roomy for all of your things.
In big cities like LA, there’s a risk of pickpocketing in crowded or touristy areas, so you may want to choose an anti-theft backpack that no one can get into, especially because the zippers are out of sight.
The Sherpani Soleil convertible backpack is a reader fave that has numerous organizational pockets, RFID blocking, secure zippers, and a chair lock cable. And you can flip it into a backpack, tote, or crossbody!
The Travelon Classic backpack is another stylish and secure option with tons of anti-theft features as well as excellent organization, and durable fabric.
If you want to travel light, a crossbody purse is another great sightseeing bag for London. Crossbodies are secure and comfortable, and your belongings will always be within reach.
If you want something more elevated, the Lo&Sons Pearl shoulder bag is perfect and so versatile for carrying in the day or for your night’s adventures. It’s made of sleek leather and has great compartments.
Or if you want practical and cute, the Travelon Classic Messenger bag is a popular travel purse that offers excellent organization and versatility. It holds a day’s necessities, feels light and is comfortable to carry, and has anti-theft features to keep everything secure.
Bandolier Emma Pebble Leather Crossbody
Alternatively, you could also opt for a sling bag or fanny pack, and if you want to have your phone ready to take pics, readers recommend crossbody phone purses, such as the Bandolier Emma crossbody phone purse. It’s sleek, can hold cards in the back, and is super practical to keep your phone secure while you snap photos.
Where to Stay in Los Angeles
Accommodation in LA can be rather pricey, especially if you’re staying along the beach. Palihotel Melrose is a centrally located hotel with a funky vibe, and Mama Shelter is one of Hollywood’s trendiest hotels. If you want to splurge in an iconic experience, try the famously pink and green Beverly Hills Hotel!
Airbnb is a great option for accommodation in Los Angeles and other parts of California. I prefer to book “the entire home” instead of opting for shared accommodation on Airbnb.
Aside from safety, I also like to feel like I’m living in the destination. It’s a small taste of local life, plus you get more amenities than you would at a hotel such as a kitchen and washing machine. Sign up here for a free $40 credit!
Read these Airbnb tips for more info!
If you prefer the convenience and comfort of a hotel room, try using Agoda.com and Hotels.com.
Tip: Hotels.com gives you a free night for every ten nights you book!
Transportation in Los Angeles
Public transportation isn’t great in LA (in fact it’s one of the worst), but it’s slowly getting better. You can take the Metro or bus, but you’ll find most locals driving their own cars or taking a Lyft or Uber. To get in and out of the city, try a train or bus at Union Station.
I love renting a car with Alamo because they have a super easy self check-in and free shuttle at the airport. I’ve used them to book rentals in LA on three different occasions now for a total of six weeks. I can’t recommend them enough. Book here!

Safety
Safety is a big concern whenever you travel, and in busy, touristy cities like Los Angeles, pickpocketing can be a common occurrence. Taking a few safety precautions can help you feel less stressed during your travels.
How can I stay safe while traveling in Los Angeles?
Be cautious about where you stash your cash so you don’t fall prey to muggings and pickpocketing. Make your clothing theft-proof and choose items with strong zippers.
Jeans are handy for this reason: you can put important items, like your wallet and phone, in your front pockets, where it’s very difficult for a wandering hand to snatch them.
Add items like the Secret Bra Pocket and Underwear with Pockets to your packing list.
And be mindful of purse snatchers! They either slash the bottom of your bag so the content fall out or slash the strap.
Wear your purse strap across your body and the zipper towards the front. For extra security, check out the “theft-proof” bags featured in this post about crossbody purses.
