Greek Fashion: What Do Locals Wear in Athens?
The Athens Greece clothing style today is smart-casual. Women of all ages are fashion-forward and body-confident, so if you want to try to blend in with the locals, opt for a polished and neat appearance. I was LOVING the fashion I saw all over Athens in the summer! It made me feel nostalgic for the 90s.
If you’re worried about what to wear in Greece to not look like a tourist, don’t be! The areas around the Acropolis, including the fun pedestrian street Apostolos Pavlos, are packed with both trendy Athenian locals and tourists dressed to explore ancient ruins.
My Taos Plim Soul Lux White Sneakers were so comfy and stylish in Greece!
Award-winning blogger and Rough Guide author, Rebecca Hall from the Life Beyond Borders blog has lived in Greece since 2008 and says Greece fashion is mainly jeans and wide leg trousers in darker shades. Skirts, flowy sundresses, and pants are perfect to wear during the day with sneakers or boots if it’s a little chillier. And when the weather really warms up, don some shorts and cute walking sandals!

What Are the Best Shoes for Greece?
While Greek clothes are more casual (yet polished) it’s really important to wear comfortable and durable shoes with a non-slip sole are key, especially while you explore the ancient sites since you’ll be walking on lots of steep slopes with smooth marble.
It can be dangerously slippery, particularly when iit rains. You’ll see plenty of sneakers, both on the fashionable side and the athletic side, in the warmer months and edgy ankle boots in the colder months.
For example, I brought the pictured pair of white sneakers from Taos to Athens (and the islands) and they have excellent arch support, which made them ideal for all-day walking.
If you want to know more about what shoes to wear not only in Athens, but for the islands, see our best shoes for Greece guide!

Since European airlines are becoming increasingly strict about baggage allowances, use a luggage scale to always ensure you meet weight requirements. This will save you the headache of having to check in your carry on because you’ve gone over the limit, and pack it into a personal item so if you buy anything to take home, you’re not exceeding weight for your return.
And always remember to check with each airline you’re flying with to see the latest baggage policies as they can change.

What Are the Best Accommodations in Greece?
We love Airbnb for accommodation in Greece. Sign up here for a free $40 credit!
I prefer to book “the entire home” instead of opting for shared accommodation on Airbnb. Aside from safety, I also like to feel like I’m living in the destination. It’s a small taste of local life plus you get more amenities than you would at a hotel such as a kitchen and washing machine.
If you prefer the convenience and comfort of a hotel room, I like using both Agoda.com and Hotels.com. Tip: Hotels.com gives you a free night for every ten nights you book!
For hostels, we recommend Hostelworld and Hostelbookers. Always read the reviews before booking to get the best idea if the hostel is right for you. Some are quiet and family friendly while others are known for their party atmosphere.

What to Do in Athens
Athens born and founder of the global platform Living Postcards shares that the city hides treasures. Treasures that the inhabitants don’t even know. Athens is the oldest city in Europe and the one with the longest history. We all know that the Parthenon is a must see, but she suggests that there are many more experiences waiting such as:
- Enjoy your morning coffee in Kolonaki, Glyfada, Kifissia or Thisio. You will love these places!
- Take a trip to the nearest beach. Thank goodness beaches are so close to the center of Athens!
- Take your friends for mezé in Piraeus, Elefsina, Drapetsona, Keratsini (great fish restaurants there too).
- Try excellent cocktails at A for Athens or at 360 Rooftop Bar. The view of the Acropolis is magical and rooftop bars are special places to take in the sunset.
- Use the metro, and see other places of Athens. Visit Panormou station for example, you can drink and eat in a lot of bars, restaurants as soon as you get off the station.
- The Kolonaki area is near Syntagma square. Go to Milioni or Tsakalof street and taste delcious souvlaki.
- Go to the Islamic museum of Athens. It’s not a place that the tourist guides would recommend, but I do. Believe me, it deserves every minute of your time.
- Visit Kipseli, and visit the old Municipal Market—each week there is events in the market, from art fairs to food events going on. It’s one of the places no one would tell you to go and is lined with beautiful green spaces and outdoor cafes and bars.
- Go to Gazi, Keramikos. You will see the Industrial Museum of Athens, popular bars, sophisticated restaurants and alternative fashion markets.
Athens Clothing Shopping
If you find you’ve left behind an item or you need to add to your holiday wardrobe, stores like H&M. Zara, Pull & Bear, Oysho, and Marks & Spencer are other popular stores to find clothing.
You can wander through the shopping district of Ermou Street, just off Parliament Square, which is the best place to find a large variety of shops to fill your every need. Or visit Athens Metro Mall, which also has a huge selection of stores.

Safety
Safety is a big concern whenever you travel, and in busy, touristy areas like Athens, pickpocketing can be a common occurrence. Taking a few safety precautions can help you feel less stressed during your travels.
How can I stay safe while traveling in Athens?
Be cautious about where you stash your cash so you don’t fall prey to muggings and pickpocketing. Make your clothing theft-proof, and choose items with strong zippers.
Jeans are handy for this reason: you can put important items, like your wallet and phone, in your front pockets, where it’s very difficult for a wandering hand to snatch it.
Add items like the Secret Bra Pocket and Underwear with Pockets to your packing list.
And be mindful of purse snatchers! They either slash the bottom of your bag so the content fall out or slash the strap.
Wear your purse strap across your body and the zipper towards the front. For extra security, check out the “theft-proof” bags featured in this post about crossbody purses.

Thanks for the great article about packing for Greece. I found your pack list such a help 8 years ago on our first trip across the pond. And now I’m planning for Greece and Turkey in May of 2025. A big party of the fun is in the planning and you have a wealth of information. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this article! We are planning a trip soon!
This was soooo helpful for my trip two weeks ago. I’m so lucky to have found this blog!!!

Thank you for your tips for traveling to Greece. We are looking at a cruise in the fall. Excited to see this part of the world.
Alex, I’m excited to use these suggestions when preparing for my trip to Greece next year. My husband and I will be celebrating our 30th anniversary!! I love your blog and Facebook group. Thanks for inspiring us all to enjoy life and to experience the amazing people, food, experiences, and culture that the world has to offer!
I’m traveling to Greece in April, 2023. Your site (and Facebook page) have been helpful for planning my trip.
I can’t wait to use all this info when I travel to Greece.
My husband and I will be on a cruise of the Greek Islands October 31-November 7. I’ll be checking out the weather forecast as it gets closer to the time we arrive, but I like to have an idea of what to take beforehand. Should I go with your autumn or winter advice for packing? I’ll have no problem with on board choices, but we’ll be on shore excursions every day of the cruise. Thanks in advance.
Hi Mary, it can remain warm in Greece until November. Autumn is not definable as a season between summer and winter; however, the temperatures do fluctuate, with the possibility of rain.
I am afraid that the best advice we can offer you is to check the weather forecast at weather.com to ensure that you have the most appropriate clothing packed for the temperature.
I would also highly recommend that you join our TFG facebook group and post any questions you have there about the weather in Greece: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous community of helpful female travelers that love to share their advice and experiences.
Have an amazing time! ?
Ill be traveling to athens in late november. Will i want a heavish winter coat?
Hi Amy, thank you for your question. The best tip is to monitor the forecast for your specific trip dates to ensure that you have the most appropriate clothing. I would suggest that you pack clothes which you can easily layer for when needed, more tips here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-stay-warm-in-cold-weather/ I would highly suggest that you join our TFG facebook group and post any questions you have there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous community of helpful female travelers that have the best advice and recommendations to share. Hope this helps. Have a brilliant trip! ?
I really enjoy your clothing recommendations. I wish you had more budget items and not so many high end clothing options. Maybe I am missing something here.
I plan to travel to Germany and Italy for work. So, I would love to see work clothing combined with play clothing.
Hi Bonnie, take a look at this post on how to interpret our product suggestions: https://travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-use-the-travel-fashion-girl-packing-lists-and-guides/ For work/play clothing, take a look at this: https://travelfashiongirl.com/womens-business-clothes-for-travel/
I love the dress featured for Athens in the autumn, but the link just takes me to a general Amazon “striped dress” page. Do you have a more specific link for it?
Hi Rachel, the items get sold out immediately so we replace them with general links so our readers can search available products instead 🙂
This is a great help for me as I am traveling to Greece and turkey in august. Is the recommended items to stay away from packing?
Maybe just stay away from common overpacking pitfalls: https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-guide-to-stop-overpacking/
Excellent! I’m off to Greece in 2 days and this is just what I needed.
Hope you had fun Rose!
Hi! Love this site! Very informative, fun and complete.
I would like to know if it’s ok to mix some summer clothes with those for autumn to a Santorini and Athens trip in the FIRST TWO WEEKS OF OCTOBER. Do you have any tips?
Thanks a lot!!
Mixing the clothes is a great idea 🙂 If the weather is cooler then layers are key!
Hi Bex~
This is super helpful. Can you say if small backpacks like the one shown above in Autumn are still popular? This is not something that’s currently common fashion in the US.
Thanks!
Any tips for handbags, backpacks, etc.? I am a bit worried about thieves especially when I chose to shop. Should I be worried about my shopping bags being snatched?

Sorry but all this is wrong.I live in Greece and in Greece people wear whatever they want. There isn’t a specific style.do you want to blend in with the locals?wear whatever is in your closet (except for the hotdog costume.ahh..high school..)
Thanks for your feedback Leni! There really isn’t a “dress code” in most parts of the world. This is just a fun guide to help travelers feel more comfortable in choosing their clothing for the weather when they travel – for Greece or any destination around the world.
Not all of us traveling are skinny 30 year olds. How about information and advice for 60 + year olds who are still active, attractive, full of life and love adventure.. I happen to be a very active 77 year young who loves to travel and wants to look chic for my age. I do still love your site..
Thanks Kee! Check out my Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ where there are many women similar to you that love to share their tips. I’m also in the process of hiring a writer that can provide the information you’ve requested as I can’t offer advice on things I don’t have experience with. Thanks!
Travelling with a group of seniors, fit and active from Oct. 18-31, overland, by bus and cruising the Islands. Accommodation in hotels nightly for dinner and breakfast.
I usually over pack and am trying to coordinate to lighten my load. I understand the mean temperature will be around 23, with some possible showers.
Thanks for the article! How about dress tips for the Islands? I’m planning a trip to Athens, Santorini and Crete next September.
I noticed there wasn’t any white article of clothing in your article. Is it too touristy?
I’ll post your question on Facebook for some feedback. Thanks!
We went to Athens and Santorini, in August, and there was nothing but white, everywhere. I bought a bunch of dresses (all white) and people were also all wearing pretty sandals. They could be bought locally for cheap too. I bought from locals boutiques, not the fast fashion chains.
We will be traveling to Athens, Santorini, and Mykonos the last two weeks in April. I plan to bring my Birkenstocks Gizah because those are my favorite travel sandals but you also recommend bringing an ankle boot. I was thinking of a closed toe espadrille instead. The end of April in the islands is an ankle boot really necessary?
Hi Alanna, the best tip is to monitor the forecast for your specific trip dates to ensure that you have the most appropriate clothing and footwear packed.
